Rodgers and Sturridge take awards

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers and striker Daneil Sturridge have been named Barclays Manager and Player of the month for August.

It is the second time Rodgers has received the accolade, while it is Sturridge’s first of his career.

The Reds are top of the league after three straight 1-0 wins, with the former Manchester City and Chelsea man hitting the winner in each of those victories, though the third came on September 1st against Manchester United.

Their maximum return of nine points marks their best start to a season since the 1994/95 campaign.

Sturridge is doubtful for the clubs trip to Rodgers’ former club Swansea City on Monday evening.

The striker had to withdraw from international duty last week with a thigh injury, joining Joe Allen, Glen Johnson, Sebastian Coates, Kolo Toure and Aly Cissokho on the sidelines.

Meanwhile, Swansea City forward Michu has tipped Iago Aspas to be a success at Liverpool this season, the Express understands.
The 27 year old played with Aspas at Celta Vigo, and the pair have remained in touch ever since.

Michu has also spoken highly of Jonjo Shelvey, who moved to the South Wales club in the summer, and is line to face his former employers at the Liberty Stadium on Monday.
