Gerrard eyes caps record

Captain Steven Gerrard has revealed his ambition to beat David Beckham’s record of international caps for an England outfield player.

Gerrard joined the 100 club when he played in his country’s last match, a 4-2 defeat to Sweden last November and is confident that he can lead the team to next year’s World Cup finals in Brazil. If he does, he could well equal Beckham’s tally of 115 when there.

Ahead of his 35th birthday next week, Jamie Carragher has hinted that he could retire if his first team opportunities remain limited.

Carragher, who with 721 is second on the list of all time appearances for Liverpool, started in the league for the first time in over two months in Saturday’s 5-0 rout over Norwich City.

Goalkeeper Pepe Reina is reportedly a target for Barcelona, after their number one Victor Valdes expressed his intentions to leave the Spanish giants at the end of the season while The Mirror reported that Valdes could indeed be a target for Brendon Rogers going forward.

Reina began his career with Barcelona, making 30 La Liga appearances before leaving for Villarreal in 2002.

Elsewhere, The Reds may have to improve their offer of £8 million if they are to lure Brazillian midfielder Phillipe Coutinho from Inter Milan.
