Matip aiming to win more trophies with Liverpool after contract extension

Cameroonian defender Joel Matip has stated his ambition of winning more trophies with Liverpool after penning a new long-term deal with the Merseyside outfit. The 28-year-old’s existing deal was due to expire at the end of the campaign but he has now penned a new contract until the summer of 2024.

Speaking to the club’s official website, he said: “This is one of the dreams that every young footballer or young kid has, but normally you know it probably won’t come true. Now I am part of this club and we won the Champions League, that’s something nobody can ever take away from you. I hope something like this will follow on again. Now we’ve seen how it is to win something and we want to have that feeling again. We’ve had it now, but we are focused to repeat it and repeat it.”
Matip started the previous campaign on the bench and Joe Gomez was generally preferred to partner Virgil van Dijk at the heart of the defence. However, the England international sustained a foot fracture during the festive period and that allowed Matip to secure regular gametime in the Premier League and Champions League.

The centre-back has since helped the Reds win their sixth Champions League crown and he has now established himself as the undisputed partner alongside Virgil van Dijk. The Reds are currently comfortably at the top of the league table with an eight-point advantage over Manchester City and they have the best chance of securing their maiden Premier League crown.

Nonetheless, they can’t get complacent with the superb start to the campaign, given they have looked vulnerable in the defensive scheme of things. The Reds have kept just two clean sheets from eight league matches this term and they have recently come across the line with a couple of lucky victories over Sheffield United and Leicester City.
